Advanced Introduction to Gender Studies
Cursusdoel
A) is versed in the core issues at stake in doing interdisciplinary feminist research;
B) has been introduced to the interdisciplinary canon of feminist and critical theory scholarship in both theory and practice;
C) is capable of applying different schools of feminist theory and methodology in socially relevant case studies;
D) has learned to manoeuvre the key conceptual tools of gender studies, namely: standpoint epistemologies, situated knowledges, intersectional gender analyses, sexual difference, deconstruction and critical approaches to race and ethnicity;
E) has learned to present the gained knowledge in both written and oral form.
Vakinhoudelijk
This is an advanced introductory course providing research master students with a theoretico-methodological framework, and enhancing students' understanding of the meaning, function and methodological value of the key concepts of feminist, queer, and postcolonial theory, among others. Special emphasis in this course lies on how to approach academic work, and how to engage critically with textual materials and with students' individual research interests. The course also introduces the students to various debates and traditions of feminist theory and elaborates the terms 'gender', 'race', 'sexuality', 'difference,' 'other’, ‘experience' and 'location' (among others) in feminist scholarship. Participants are expected to approach the course from the perspective of their research topics and interests.

Toelichting
The course is composed of both lectures and discussions. It is divided in two sessions: one plenary lecture (all the students) and one seminar session. The plenary involves a lecture by the teacher and some following discussion. Each seminar session will follow this format: students' group presentation, discussion, short wrapping up lecture by the teacher.
Bijdrage
Students are also required to prepare one oral presentation in group and manage a discussion following the presentation.
Voorbereiding
Students are required to study the compulsory materials assigned for each session, attend class, prepare an oral presentation in group, and complete final paper.
