Cultural History of Magic and Science
Cursusdoel
After completing the course students are able to:
- Students can put the prominence of Renaissance magic, as well as other sciences most educated people no longer believe in, in intellectual and cultural historical context.
- Students can read and interpret historical sources, ranging from Ficino’s On Life to Shakespeare’s The Tempest, that discuss obscure subjects such as alchemy, magic, and witchcraft.
- Students can disentangle the meanings of ‘magic’, as it was used in different historical periods, by different people from the same period, and by later historians.
- Students can critically reflect on the seemingly self-evident categories we use to make sense of our lives and the world we live in.
Relationship between tests and course goals:
All assessment methods assess all of the learning goals. The emphasis differs, however.
Participation: mostly goals 2 and 4.
Oral presentations: mostly goals 1 and 3.
Essay: mostly goals 1 and 2.
Exam: mostly goals 1 and 3.
Vakinhoudelijk
This course focuses on the relationship between science and magic in the period between 1500 and 1700. Although the two seem mutually exclusive in our age, in the early modern period that was by no means obvious. It is, in fact, impossible for historians of this period to maintain rigid distinctions between tradition and innovation, the natural and supernatural, between the rational and irrational, fact and fantasy, the ridiculous and the sensible, popular and scholarly discourse. This is not to say that early modern scholars were confused or did not know what they were doing. It is merely to say that their way of understanding nature was different from ours. Though disorientating at first, eventually we can learn to appreciate how magic and science were intricately, and often indistinguishably, intertwined in the minds of people in Western Europe.
Format
The course runs for fifteen weeks; there are two two-hour sessions per week. The instructor will give an introductory lecture highlighting central themes in the first session of the week. The students have studied the required reading, select a quote from the reading and prepare the reading questions (available on workspace). In class you can ask questions and are invited to join discussions. The second session in the week is for oral presentations, discussion and assignments. Halfway the course the students write an individual essay. The course will be rounded off with a take-home exam, which will test the general knowledge and insights of the students. Suggestions for assignments and proposed further reading are given in the course manual.
