Summer 2023 topic: Ecocriticism
Literature in Focus: Ecocriticism asks how the literary arts and the human imagination respond to the changing environments of the twentieth and twenty-first century. While the study of the environment in literary texts has long been vital to literary criticism, since the 1990s it has come together in a so-called “environmental turn”, as a movement concerned with the questions that arise in times of rapid environmental and social change. In this course we discuss how environmental problems and questions urge us to rethink and reshape the role of the human in the future of our planet. We examine the notion of ecocriticism and the thriving environmental humanities through various artistic, cultural, and literary perspectives from around the world.
This course is shaped via several “keywords” that are integral to the growing body of scholarship in the environmental humanities. Words such as nature, life, extinction, care, and justice guide our discussions on the generative potential of creative cultural production and the ways in which art and literature can build worlds and envision different futures. We will engage with environmental literary and cultural theory from fields like settler colonial studies, Indigenous studies, queer and gender studies, feminist materialisms, postcolonialism, anticolonialism, and animal studies.
