Vakinhoudelijk
We have all seen the cute online videos of animals ‘doing the darndest things’. Sometimes they are just adorable, but other times they are clever, resourceful, brave, and loyal. But are they really? And how would we know? Philosophers, ethologists, primatologists, psychologists, linguists, and neuroscientists have always taken a keen interest in the animal mind, often as a means to make sense of the human mind. But what do we really know about animal cognition? Are animals conscious? Do animals reason about the world? Do animals think about the mental states of others? How do animals communicate? Do they have language? Do animals have culture? Are animals moral agents, or do they deserve moral consideration at all?
In this Senior Seminar in Philosophy, we will consider these questions and more from a philosophical point of view, but given the strongly interdisciplinary nature of the topic, we will make use of resources from many other disciplines too.
