Cursusdoel

1. Students will acquire knowledge of and insight in different approaches towards gender, ethnicity, religious practices and intersectionality.
2. Students will become familiar with critical epistemological approaches to knowledge.
3. Students will acquire the tools to critically reflect on culture and society, and a range of phenomena within it.
4. Students will learn to think intersectionally, reflecting on how gender, ethnicity/ "race", class and sexuality co-construct each other.

Priority rules apply to this course. Make sure you register for this course before 14 November 12.00 noon to be considered for enrollment.
The following students are guaranteed a place:
  • BA TCS or LAS;
  • students who are registered for the minor Gender Studies;
  • pre-master’s students;
  • exchange students.
Other students will be placed by means of random selection.

The course aims at providing students with a map of contemporary feminist approaches to issues of gender, ethnicity and religious practices in a European context. Each session deals with a different set of interpretations, theories, topics and case studies analysed from social, political, historical and cultural perspectives. Feminist theory and intersectional theory are used to unpack the entanglement of the operations of race, gender, class, religion and sexuality in contemporary societies. These approaches are in critical dialogue with each other, as well as with several other overlapping scholarly fields such as postcolonial theory and cultural studies. Special attention will be given to the debates about multiculturalism, Islam and migration. The book can be bought at Savannah Bay (Telingstraat 13, Utrecht).

LAS and TCS students who follow this course as part of the core curriculum of their major (hoofdrichting Postcolonial and Gender Studies) are required to complete one of the following compulsory preparation courses: Introduction to Gender Studies (blok 3), Gender, etniciteit en cultuurkritiek (blok 1) or Gender, Ethnicity and Cultural Critique (blok 1).
