Politics of Representation: Gender and Ethnicity in Contemporary Cultural Practice
Cursusdoel
- Students know the main themes, theories and methods as employed in Gender Studies in the Humanities with regard to cultural practices.
- Students learn how to make an intersectional analysis of both historical and contemporary cultural representations.
- Students know how to make an academic (poster) presentation pertaining to the above issues.
Vakinhoudelijk
The following students are guaranteed a place:
- BA TCS or LAS;
- students who are registered for the minor Gender Studies;
- pre-master’s students;
- exchange students.
The aim of this interdisciplinary course is to develop and practice a critical way of looking at contemporary cultural practices. In these practices of production, dissemination and reception, masculinity and femininity are permanently (re)constructed, just as are concepts of class, race, ethnicity, and geopolitical location.

LAS and TCS students who follow this course as part of the core curriculum of their major (hoofdrichting Postcolonial and Gender Studies) are required to complete one of the following compulsory preparation courses: Introduction to Gender Studies (blok 3), Gender, etniciteit en cultuurkritiek (blok 1) or Gender, Ethnicity and Cultural Critique (blok 1). Aanvullende informatie
Exchange students who are required to return to their home university before January, are allowed to choose an Early Exit option for this course. The Early Exit option means that students can finish the course before Christmas break, receiving 5 ECTS for the course. Students must make arrangements with the course coordinator at the start of the course.

Toelichting
Two meetings every week (1 lecture of 2 hours and 1 seminar of 2 hours).
Bijdrage
Active participation, commentary on peers' work, exchange of insights and ideas, critical reflection on the readings, gathering own materials for presentation, textual and visual analysis and discussion.
Voorbereiding
Read assigned book chapters and articles, prepare readings for presentation and discussion, collect visual material to analyse according to the methods and models offered in the course, critically assess the readings from the perspective of one's own discipline and/or research interests, prepare assignments.
