Utrecht Data School Practicum II
Cursusdoel
During the second practicum they specialize in the contexts of network analysis and text analysis and learn how to apply these in group setting on a research project of their own.
Vakinhoudelijk
The following students are guaranteed a place:
- BA Media en cultuur / Media and Culture;
- BA CIW;
- TCS or LAS;
- premaster’s students.
Data play a growing role in our society; humans and machines generate more and more data that are stored better and are more often available. This data supply, combined with innovative research methods offers fascinating possibilities for researchers and students. Utrecht Data School (UDS) is a research platform and a course that offers an inside in the possibilities and the risks of data research.
UDS brings together students and researchers from different disciplines, experts in the field of data analysis and speakers from different organizations where data practices play a role. By doing so, we try to show the different sides of working with data and allow students to learn from these disciplines. Furthermore, students experience what it’s like to work on data projects and learn based on practical examples how to reflect on the decisions they face in their own research.
During the UDS Practicum I, students are trained to work with the latest tools for data research. In ten weeks, they are trained to work with these tools, reflect critically on data practices and make analyses and visualisations. During the course, they work on a portfolio that demonstrates their data skills.
Following the UDS Practicum I, students can follow UDS Practicum II. During this practicum, students work with the basis they learn to set up a data project of their own. The second Practicum introduces a few new skills (network analysis, text analysis) and asks of students to apply the skills from
Practicum I.
Practicum I is required for participation of Practicum II.
Werkvormen
Toelichting
Continuing on the knowledge from Utrecht Data School Practicum I, students develop their skills in text analysis and network analysis. Individually, students develop a portfolio that demonstrates their data skills. In groups, they work on a research in which they put the skills from both Practicums in practice on a question of their own choosing.
Voorbereiding
Students are expected to install the necessary software packages timely and bring their laptops to class.
