Thesis BA History
Cursusdoel
Er is geen informatie over het cursusdoel bekend.
Vakinhoudelijk
Block 1 is reserved for students who only need to complete the thesis to finish their Bachelor's and who have actively participated in the thesis course before. This is evidenced not only by previous enrollment, but also by your attendance and result in a previous attempt.
After June 26, we will check whether students enrolled for block 1 meet these requirements. If not, you will be deregistered for block 1. You will then be responsible for registering for an alternative course during the late enrolment days at the end of August.
Want to know if you meet the conditions? Then contact study advice during a consultation hour.
It is not possible to make an exception for students who do not meet the conditions.
Please note that this course is only accessible for students from the BA History who started their studies in 2020-2021 (or earlier). Students from later starting dates are requested to register for a different course: GE3V23002 Bachelor thesis History.
How do you register?
You register for the course via Osiris, but registration for a preferred group is done in the block prior to the block in which you write the thesis, via a digital form. You will receive more information about this once the course registration period has closed.
Are you writing a thesis of 7.5 EC (8,000 words)? Then you can do this in block 2 or 4.
Are you writing a dissertation of 15 EC (12,000 words)? Then you can start this in block 1, 2, and 3. Please note, a different course code applies: GE3V23002 Bachelor Thesis History.
Entry requirements
You can only participate in the BA thesis if you have obtained at least 30 EC at level 3, including at least the third or fourth course of the Specialisation.
The BA thesis is the individual completion of the Bachelor of History. The final paper may derive from the theme of your chosen Specialisation, but is at all times an independent product.
The student works on an outline for the final paper in the block prior to the BA thesis; an outline of sufficient quality is a prerequisite for participation in the BA thesis.
The structure of the BA thesis must recognizably include:
- a clearly defined and motivated problem statement;
- an elaboration of the main question into sub-questions;
- an explanation of the theoretical/analytical framework;
- a reflection on the method used and its operationalization;
- a critical justification and appreciation of the empirical material used (literature, sources);
- an argument presenting the empirical material and relating it to the problem or question;
- a conclusion, briefly summarizing and analyzing the results found, again in light of the question;
- a bibliography and a notes section.
Learning Objectives
- Upon completion of the BA final paper, the student will have learned to:
- Independently locate and evaluate relevant scholarly articles and historical sources
- Independently determine their own thesis topic
- Independently formulate a clear question statement
- Independently conduct research based, among other things, on primary sources and that is embedded in historiography
- Independently operationalize research
- Critically analyze primary sources and literature within the framework of the research question
- Draw scientifically sound conclusions and formulate well-founded opinions based on secondary and primary literature
- Present the results of that research in writing and at an academic level
- Test the outcome of the research against the "state of the art" of science
- Give and receive (peer) feedback on partial texts of research papers
