Cursusdoel

By the end of the course the student:
  1. Understands and is able to describe and evaluate the normative dimensions of sustainability;
  2. Has knowledge of and insight in theories from ethics and political philosophy that are conducive to understanding and analyzing the debates on sustainability, in particular:
    • Has a basic knowledge and understanding of a number of the central concepts and theoretical positions in animal- and environmental ethics;
    • Is familiar with and has insight in normative issues that are central to climate ethics;
  3. Is able to integrate the various normative questions and can relate these to applied public or scientific debates on sustainability and climate change;
  4. Is able to make clear and adequate contributions to public and scientific debates on sustainability and climate change.     

Vakinhoudelijk

The notion that one should strive for a sustainable world seems widespread. Nonetheless, making this ambition operational appears to be rather complicated in practice, and implies many normative decisions. For instance, the need to address climate change-related problems is widely acknowledged. But how to address this need while simultaneously guaranteeing energy security in the Global North, industrial development in the Global South, and food security on a planet that is likely to exceed a population of 8 billion people, by the end of this course? Furthermore, questions of climate justice often have an anthropocentric focus, but is this focus justified? What is the role of non-human animals in a sustainable world? This course discusses core questions in the debate on sustainability and deals with their normative background. The course approaches sustainability as a normative issue that has direct implications on our dealing with humans, animals, and nature. It touches open concepts and approaches from animal ethics, environmental ethics, and climate ethics, and discusses principles of justice, welfare, problems of uncertainty, the role of technology, moral psychology, and institutional questions that arise in the context of sustainability.

You have to be enrolled in the MA Applied Ethics. Other students need to contact the course coordinator: Frank Meijboom.
The entrance requirements for Exchange Students will be checked by International Office and the programme coordinator. Therefore, you do not have to contact the programme coordinator yourself.

Students are expected to be well prepared and contribute actively in debates in class and during the project.
