Cursusdoel

After successful completion of the course, students:
1. have gained in-depth knowledge and understanding of the ways in which cultural, social and intellectual issues century figure in American literary texts;
2. are able to select and analyze relevant primary and secondary sources and to produce original scholarly work on the topic of the course;
3. are able to identify and apply critical concepts and literary theory relevant to the study of American literature.

Vakinhoudelijk

This course's discussion of key texts of contemporary American Literature will be predicated upon the following questions: How does contemporary American literature engage with other forms of media? In what ways does it shape conversations about the role of gender and sexuality in American life? What theories of literature, gender and media are relevant to our reading?


Trigger warning: the required reading includes extreme material, including incest, rape, sexual assault & violence. Some set texts are also long & technically challenging.

Je moet minimaal 45 punten van het bachelor programma hebben behaald

Voorkennis

Students should have read widely in English-language literature, be able to defend positions during discussions in English and read and write complex, proficient English texts (CEFR levels: C1 for listening, speaking and writing; C2 for reading).
