Cursusdoel

The student:
  • gains knowledge of a variety of critical perspectives within the study of religion, gender and sexuality (feminist, post-secular, post-colonial and queer theory).
  • is able to compare, apply and assess the significance of different disciplinary approaches and political-analytical perspectives by an analysis of current examples.
  • conducts a case study independently, using the theoretical-conceptual frameworks studied in this course. This results in an academically sound paper.

Vakinhoudelijk

This course addresses the question why it is that religion, gender and sexuality often seem to be in a tense relation to one another. Issues of gender and religion appeal to deeply rooted convictions and deeply felt emotions among religious and non-religious people alike. Current debates on, for instance, the prohibition of the headscarf in the public sphere, the membership of women in the Reformed Political party (SGP) and the obligation of religious civil servants to marry gay and lesbian couples show that religion has not, as has been assumed, disappeared from the public arena. On the contrary, religion is very much present and often seems to present itself (or is represented) through the scope of gender and sexuality.

The course situates these contemporary debates within a historical framework, exploring how religion’s relationship with gender and sexuality has evolved over time. From early theological interpretations of gender roles in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam to modern feminist, post-colonial, and queer critiques of religious traditions, students will gain insight into the shifting boundaries of these relationships. In what ways have social and political changes—such as colonialism or secularization—transformed religious conceptions of sexuality? How do people make sense of their religious and sexual experiences, now and in the past?

Through a multidisciplinary approach that draws on religious studies, theology, sociology, and anthropology, the course equips students with critical tools to analyze how gender and sexuality function within religious traditions and public discourse. Key theoretical perspectives—including feminist, queer, post-colonial, and post-secular thought—will help students investigate questions such as: What does it mean to identify as religious, secular, male, female, straight, gay, liberal, conservative, Dutch, or European? How are these identities negotiated within religious communities, public spaces, and private lives?

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply historical and theoretical frameworks to contemporary challenges, transformations, and questions at the intersection of religion, gender, and sexuality in diverse social and cultural contexts.

Hoor/werkcollege (8 weken 1x 4 uur) Toelichting: - 8 x 4 uur college: bijeenkomsten van 4 uur per week met hoor- en werkcolleges - tekstlezing aan de hand van opdrachten - mondelinge en schriftelijke presentaties - groepsopdrachten - discussies

Bijdrage aan groepswerk: - reacties geven op opdrachten van medestudenten (correcties, commentaren, verwerkingen) - voorbereiden van groepsopdrachten - organiseren van en deelname aan discussies

Voorbereiding

Voorbereiding bijeenkomsten: - individuele tekststudie aan de hand van opdrachten - via Studion bijhouden van individueel logboek voor verslaglegging van het leerproces - voorbereiden van mondelinge en schriftelijke presentaties - coreferaten geven bij presentaties van deelnemers

BA cursus Gender, etniciteit en cultuurkritiek; BA cursus Religion and the Body of gelijkwaardige cursus(sen) op het gebied van theologie, religiestudies, filosofie of genderstudies.
