Toelichting
The lectures are an introduction to the week’s topic and aim to situate the case study in its wider cultural and historical context.
Voorbereiding
In order to succeed in this course, it is vital to attend and prepare for the lectures and seminars. We will work together to cultivate our capacity for close reading, analysis, synthesis, and communication. You are expected to participate actively and will learn more if you do. Active, thoughtful, respectful, and constructive participation in class discussion and group activities will help us all to collaboratively learn about our subject of study.
WerkcollegeToelichting
In the first seminar, we will explore different aspects of the weekly topic by discussing relevant research literature. By discussing these texts in small ‘expert groups’ we will be able to put them into a dialogue with each other and get an idea of the academic debate on the topic. For this peer-learning approach to work well, it is vital that you prepare the assigned texts thoroughly so that you can actively engage in the discussion. The second seminar is student-led, through creative group work and assignments, we will explore how the knowledge, approaches, and arguments we encountered in the lecture and seminar 1 can be applied in the practices of cultural historians.
Bijdrage
Each week, you will sign up for an ‘expert group’ that prepares one of the assigned texts in detail and presents it to the rest of the class in seminar 1. As such, you are responsible for each other’s learning.
Voorbereiding
Prepare the assigned texts thoroughly so that you can actively engage in the discussion. The day before the seminar, each student will submit a summary of the assigned text on Blackboard.
