In this course, students will use the knowledge and skills acquired in the program and apply this to a real-world assignment. The aim is to let students practice research-based consulting involving project acquisition and execution of a research project in a team. Key learning objectives are to gain experience with client contact and use knowledge and skills taught in the Master programs to tackle real-life sustainability challenges.

After the course, the student can:
  • Work on a multidisciplinary project by providing disciplinary input/analysis and contributing to the integration of the disciplinary inputs into a final deliverable
  • Make the project output accessible to an audience of both specialist and non-specialist stakeholders
  • Take responsibility for the personal role in the team process, and reflect on one’s role and the role of the team members
  • Present research findings as a team to the client

Vakinhoudelijk

In the consultancy project, students work on a sustainability assignment for a real-world client in a multidisciplinary team of 5-6 people. A team consists of students from at least two different disciplines (i.e., two SUSD tracks or one SUSD track plus Water Science Management). Clients can be companies, research institutes, NGOs, governments, etc. Acquisition for a client/project and the team formation is in the hands of the students.

Next to performing disciplinary research by the individual team members, all team members contribute to integrating the disciplinary inputs into the final project deliverable(s). In consultation with their client, teams are encouraged to be creative in the type of final deliverable. Think, e.g., of a sustainability game, a (software) tool, educational materials (for teaching or information purposes), (part of) a company's sustainability report, etc. If the final deliverable is a report, one could think of creative reporting, e.g., with PowerPoint slides for the main storyline complemented with in-depth text boxes.

At the end of the project, the teams present their project to the other teams, their clients, and the university staff.

There is a introduction lecture at the start of the course. The main activities are by the students themselves and consist of group work and individual work. At the end of the course all groups present their results in a poster session.

Verplicht | Weging 1% | ECTS 7,5

The course grade is determined based on the final deliverable(s) (40% of grade), the process (40% of grade) and the poster presentation (20% of grade).
