After completion of the course, the student is able to:
  • give an overview of the concept of sustainable development, its history, and various ways to operationalize it;
  • identify and explain different perspectives on sustainable development and their key concepts;
  • distinguish the contributions from relevant scientific disciplines and integrate these for interdisciplinary approaches to sustainable development;
  • analyze real-world problems from multiple perspectives and understand that the perception of problems and solutions depends on one’s point of view and frame of reference;
  • articulate own ambitions in contributing to sustainable development and define an MSc study path accordingly.

Vakinhoudelijk

This course aims at providing an overview of different perspectives on sustainable development in order to illustrate the complexity of sustainability challenges and of finding and implementing solutions for them. The course starts by elaborating on the concepts and various definitions of sustainable development, including the recently defined sustainable development goals. We then explore in more detail some of the many different perspectives that can be taken on sustainable development. We also use different assignments to reflect in more detail on some of these perspectives.

The tutorials support the group and individual assignments

Bijdrage

Some of the assignments are conducted in small groups (3-4 students). Each member of a group is expected to equally contribute to the assignment; free-riding will result in a lower individual grade.

Verplicht | Weging 100% | ECTS 7,5

The final grade is made up of group work, group presentation and an individual research paper. In addition, students prepare a personal ambition statement. This is not graded, but presenting it before the deadline is required to pass this course.
