Students learn about the development, characteristics, and functions of urban infrastructure systems and how these shape the governance and planning of cities. After completing this course students will be able to:
  1. Identify the historical, institutional, socio-spatial, and political factors shaping infrastructural change in contemporary urbanism
  2. Define and represent the socio-technical dimensions of urban infrastructures across different infrastructural domains
  3. Apply theoretical insights to analyze the governance of urban infrastructures in local case studies
  4. Critically reflect on sustainable infrastructural development in different geographical contexts (North/South)
  5. Design, develop and present research on current infrastructural challenges in Dutch cities

Networked infrastructures such as energy, water, wastewater, telecommunication, and transport systems guide and facilitate urban functioning and urban life in a multitude of ways. These socio-technical systems provide fundamental conduits through which modern cities operate as backbones for urban livelihoods and economies, they integrate (or splinter) cities socially and spatially and mediate resource flows between nature and the city. Much of the history of modern urbanism can be understood as a series of attempts to 'roll-out, extend, multiply or integrate networks (e.g. the sanitary city, the electric city, the autocity, the bike city, or the smart city). Urban planning is thus deeply rooted in infrastructure planning aiming at liveable and modern urban places through the intermediary of infrastructure.
This course introduces the history, the key (ecological, social, and economic) characteristics of these urban support systems, and discusses their co-evolution with urban environments. The focus will be on recent governance, planning, and social challenges associated with the splintering of urban infrastructures, the risks of failing infrastructures, infrastructures as potential mediators of environmental sustainability transformations, and the role of new and emerging infrastructures in facilitating urban services and functions. Based on urban case studies (for example, Utrecht, Maputo, Rio de Janeiro, Rotterdam, Los Angeles, etc.), the course identifies place-based development patterns of urban infrastructures, infrastructural crises, and potential solutions to the sustainability transition of cities and infrastructure. Lectures
Toelichting

The course comprises: self-directed reading and learning, lectures with interactive exercises, guest lectures, individual and group projects, online support, and group presentations with feedback. The course will start with a series of introductory lectures and readings on current urban infrastructure debates. This aims to: (1) build theoretical foundations on the key characteristics of infrastructure systems, their societal functions, their history and co-evolution with cities and broader patterns of sociotechnical change (and stability). The course includes papers/presentations on specific empirical case studies on urban infrastructures, and theoretical debates.
