Cities, States, and Citizenship: A Long-Term View of Institutional Change and Persistence
Cursusdoel
- Students acquire knowledge of theories concerning the origins, development and effect of institutions on states, communities and policies.
- Students acquire knowledge of methods for long-term historical research derived from the social sciences
- Students develop skills in the application of these theories and methods in historical research
- Students develop a critical awareness of the possibilities and limitations of these theories and methods
Vakinhoudelijk
This course familiarizes you with long-term theories of institutional change and persistence, which are derived from the social sciences, and explores the complex ways in which institutional blueprints and trajectories become instrumental in shaping present-day developments. This is essentially a methods course which equips you with the necessary skills to be able to conduct long-term institutional and policy analysis.
You are allowed to take your exams in Dutch or English. Please discuss your preference with your teacher at the beginning of the course.
Please note Only students from the MA History of Politics and Society and the MA Geschiedenis: educatie en communicatie are allowed to register for this course. All other students have to contact the programme coordinator.
