Cursusdoel

The course aims to optimize the knowledge of the history, development and current functioning of various institutions (concert halls, orchestras, ensembles, bands, pop festivals, broadcast organisations and the like) within the European music business.
Students will acquire profound insight into the aims, agencies and artistic profiles of these organisations, as well as their audiences, their position within the overall culture industry, the ways in which they are financed, how their products are disseminated and received. The students will be trained to analyse these profiles, as well as to situate their findings within diverse, current academic discourses. Students will acquire specific 'jargon' and terms of business language; create an insight in how the music business functions and which 'laws' and 'rules' apply within the business. Students will develop a business "know how" and a "business attitude". Students will be asked to form an opinion, to formulate this opinion and to discuss this opinion with valuable arguments. Students will get a grip on the current discourse and "hot topics" within the music business and are able to take a position in that discourse.

The course Musical Infrastructure in an International Context studies the history, development and current functioning of various institutions (concert halls, orchestras, ensembles, bands, pop festivals, broadcast organisations and the like) within the European music business. Topics such as institutional aims, agencies and artistic profiles will be addressed, as well as their audiences, their position within the overall culture industry, the ways in which they are financed, how their products are disseminated and received.

The course will address the classical music infrastructure due to its longstanding tradition, however it will also address other fields (pop, jazz, techno). The students will analyze the profiles of diverse institutions and situate their findings within diverse, current academic discourses. The course will resonate with the adjacent Musical Knack Lab courses where additional practical skills are trained.

The course is a seminar with lectures, student presentations and classroom debate.

Bijdrage

When assignments are tackled in groups, each member will need to have a specific and well-defined role in the academic process.

Voorbereiding

The students are obliged to read the texts thoroughly and critically, prepare analyses and present their research results for class discussion.

Prepare and lead a discourse about a current trending topic within the music industry. (Group assignment, 2 or 3 persons per group) Every week, we will make time for 1 topic in class. METHOD • Research the topic • Find relevant articles (Blogs etc. are allowed) about different opinions concerning the topic • Discuss within your group all relevant ideas / statements / questions • Prepare a discourse for class • Present your topic including the most relevant literature and opinions in class to you

YOUR PRESENTATION SHOULD INCLUDE: • The organisational structure of your institution (bv. Organogram, ...). • What place do they take in the music industry as an organisation? • What is their business model? (what is their product, how are they making money, what is their audience, ...) • What are their assets and which challenges do they face in the current music industry? • Can you give them advice as to what they can do different to be more successful?
