Research Lab I: Doing Gender
Cursusdoel
A) work with important aspects of Gender Studies, such as critical reading, argumentation, and self-reflection;
B) use the library to collect and analyse data;
C) apply for an internship related to their field of study
D) become familiar with the academic practice of giving and receiving feedback
Vakinhoudelijk
This course starts with the yearly NOISE Summerschool, which takes place in the week before the academic year starts. After the thematically-focused introduction via the Summerschool, the course continues to train students in the basic blocks of doing interdisciplinary gender-studies research: reading critically, building arguments, situating oneself, finding academic sources, composing a bibliography, and - more generally - developing a number of skills related to academic thinking and writing. Next to it, the course introduces students to the internship they will have to carry out during their MA trajectory by teaching them how to find and apply for an internship, what its administrative steps are, and how to make the best out of this experience. This, the course offers students the opportunity to explore what "doing gender" means, both in theory and in practice.
