Contemporary Feminist Debates
Cursusdoel
A) will have gained knowledge of current feminist and gender studies research of the Graduate Gender Programme professors at Utrecht University;
B) will have acquired expertise in doing theoretical and empirical research in Gender Studies;
C) will be able to position themselves vis-à-vis a set of contemporary feminist debates;
D) will be able to present an in-depth study of one or more aspects related to the debates in an academically sufficient manner in both written and oral form.
Vakinhoudelijk
This course is designed to introduce RMA students to the state of the arts in contemporary feminist and gender studies research undertaken by our own professors from the Graduate Gender Programme at Utrecht University. The legacies of these debates will be traced to explore how political, cultural and theoretical connections and contestations inform disciplinary and research strands in gender studies scholarship. The course aims to offer students a wide range of methodological and theoretical tools that will allow for contextualization and positioning of research topics in Gender Studies from interdisciplinary perspectives including postcolonial studies, queer and trans studies, critical race studies, critical security studies, settler colonial studies, and feminist historiography.

Toelichting
The course consists of weekly guest lectures from the faculty of the Graduate Gender Programme followed by student led discussion and Q&A of the lecture and the assigned study material. The course introduces the students to the research expertises of the program and trains the students in participating in lively feminist debates.

Collaborative small groups presentations.
Voorbereiding
Students are required to read the compulsory study material, to engage in an informed discussion of the course content, to bring in their own debates via an oral presentation, and to write a paper engaging 'feminist debates'.

Assessment criteria: • Capacity to critically engage with theoretical texts, with or without the use of case studies. • capacity to critically discuss and confront various theoretical positions that compose a specific debate in order to ultimately position your own argument. • Academic writing, clarity, coherence and argumentation skills. • Fulfillment of academic requirements for referencing.
