Vakinhoudelijk
This interdisciplinary module covers advanced academic skills at the Research Master level. The course is organized around topics related to academic methodology and thesis writing. The class sessions serve as a workshop space where students can discuss work-in-progress and also offer feedback to one another. In the first semester (blocks 1-2), Research Design I is comprised of two different, interconnected strands. The first strand focuses on developing skills and practical academic knowledge, while the second strand aims at developing skills in scholarly literacy and academic writing. This includes learning how to approach the research and writing process in terms of time-management and effective professional communication. The seminar aims to offer a research environment in which students can reflect on their research topic at a meta-discursive level, with special emphasis on methodological issues and theoretical perspectives. In this respect, the course also serves as a space to articulate specific challenges students are facing in relation to the research process in general and to thesis preparation in specific.
Aanvullende informatie
Students acquire skills to orient themselves in the academic/research job market and develop the appropriate language and style to apply for research positions and practice networking skills, including the following:
- how to locate calls for papers for journals and conferences in their areas of interests;
- how to present research contents in front of an academic audience;
- how to provide oral and written feedback and engage in conversation with academic peers;
- how to effectively communicate and approach experts.
