Research MA Thesis Gender Studies (2025/2026: Jaar)
Cursusdoel
A) to demonstrate the necessary analytical and writing skills to conduct independent scholarly research and present a theoretically sound and intersectionally developed argument in Gender Studies;
B) to give a clear description and justification of, and to present and use in practice a feminist methodological and theoretical framework;
C) to formulate clearly the central research question or problem of the thesis and present a convincing answer to it in the thesis;
D) to critically position oneself in the scholarly debate and to contribute to this debate by producing new scholarly knowledge, presented to fellow researchers in the required academic form.
Vakinhoudelijk
The RMA thesis is a scholarly developed research project in which the student is expected to contribute, on the basis of independent research, to a debate within the discipline. It should be structured around a central research question (set out in the introductory sections) to which it provides a response and thereby offers a contribution to existing scholarship (explicated in the individual chapters and in the conclusion). The central research question must be clearly formulated in the thesis and its relevance to scholarly discussions within the discipline must be shown. The body of the text should provide a clear description and justification of the methodological and theoretical framework used to respond to the research question and may employ a case study relevant to the research question or problem and its sociopolitical relevance. The thesis must be written in correct and clear English and should be max. 30.000 words in length, including notes and bibliography.
The individual thesis trajectory will be supervised by a staff member of the Graduate Gender Programme. The thesis will be evaluated by both the supervisor and a second reader, which will be chosen and/or assigned during the thesis trajectory.

Survey of the literature and source material on a chosen topic; independent study of literature and sources, as shown in the final version of the RMA thesis. Assessment by two supervisors, one of whom is the primary supervisor.
