Given the dynamic development of Gender Studies, interventions in the field have been wide-ranging and diverse. This special-topics course offers students the opportunity to delve deeply into some of the more recent directions and orientations that the field has taken by closely focusing in on a specialized subfield or topic. Possible topics for the course include (but are not limited to) queer theory, transgender studies, critical disability studies, feminist techno-science studies, masculinity studies, visual and media studies, critical border and migration studies and digital media. While the specific theme and format of the seminar will vary each year depending on the expertise of the instructor, the course will consistently engage with contemporary critical questions, ideas, and practices at the forefront of scholarly research and creative inquiry in the fields of gender and postcolonial studies and in the specific subfield under study. The course will be taught from a transdisciplinary perspective and will be informed by feminist, queer, critical race, and/or postcolonial theoretical approaches. Students will be familiarized with cutting-edge scholarship and will become well versed in the debates at the center of the course’s specialized theme. Students will strengthen their critical thinking skills through research, writing, and/or oral presentations.
Werkvormen
Toelichting
The course seminars are set up either as a combination of lectures and discussion, or as a close reading seminar, in which the reading of primary texts and their discussion in class are the main focus. A session always consists of active student engagements (e.g. presentations, discussion leading), and ample time for class discussion.
Bijdrage
Students are required to participate in an engaged way with the chosen course assignments. These can change on a yearly basis, depending on the instructor of the class, but they will comprise assignments such as oral small group presentations, brief statements or reading notes to open each class session, individual contributions to a class blog or a creative writing assignment.
Voorbereiding
Students are required to attend each session and to come well prepared by completing all assigned readings. It is also important to come to class with thoughts and questions about the material, as the majority of each session is spent delving more deeply into the texts.
