Introduction to Television Studies (2024/2025: Periode 4)

Cursusdoel

After completing the course, the student has:
  • elementary knowledge regarding theoretical and analytical concepts with which (post)television can be studied;
  • elementary knowledge with regard to the medium-specific characteristics of television;
  • extended their repertoire knowledge in the field of television;
  • elementary knowledge of the main topics and discussions within television studies;
  • elementary knowledge regarding the historical and social context of television.
After completing the course, the student can:
  • explain and use selected concepts for the textual analysis of television;
  • provide substantiated and constructive feedback on the work of peers;
  • study systematically, comprehensively and critically theoretical texts.

Vakinhoudelijk

This course provides an overview of important concepts within television studies. With the use of examples, concepts such as 'broadcasting', 'flow', 'liveness' and 'seriality' will be discussed in more detail. The course will also address the historical development of the medium to outline current changes such as narrowcasting, mobile screens, social media and streaming platforms.
Each week has a central concept that is first discussed on the basis of theoretical texts and then used to analyze cases studies such as news broadcasts, sitcoms, sports broadcasts, media events, and transmedia phenomena. Students will also analyze the news and live television broadcasts. The social and transmedia context of television will also be addressed.

This course is part of Core Profile 2 of the BA-programme “Media and Culture” and builds on historical and theoretical knowledge gained in Core Profile 1. It offers further training in academic (research) skills, with a special focus on analytical skills.

This course is only open to students of the BA Media and Culture in English. Core profile 2.

During the lectures, the main theoretical concepts of Television Studies are discussed and historically contextualized, while simultaneously exploring their contemporary relevance. In the seminars, the emphasis will be on conducting close readings of key theoretical texts and analyzing (post)television phenomena based on these readings. Students will receive feedback on their assignments aimed at enhancing their theoretical and analytical knowledge, as well as refining their reading and academic writing skills.

Bijdrage

Students are expected to provide peer feedback on writing assignments by fellow students and actively participate in plenary discussions.

Voorbereiding

To prepare for the lectures and seminars students are expected to study the assigned literature and to make their assignments.

The course assumes that you are familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style for referring and annotating literature; that you attended a library instruction; that you are able to summarize the main aspects of an academic text; that you are able to write a short well-structured text using academic language.
