Workshop Data Journalism
Cursusdoel
At the end of the course, the student can:
1. Collect, analyze and visualize (open)data for journalistic purposes;
2. Understand the role and function of data and investigative journalism in democratic and non-democratic settings;
3. Write journalistic content with the support of data;
4. Leverage data analysis to report, tell and produce stories for general audiences.
Vakinhoudelijk
As society continues to increasingly rely on digital platforms for news, the demand for accurate and ethical reporting has also skyrocketed. This lab provides the foundational knowledge, and equally, an opportunity for students to understand, embrace and critique modern ways of data-driven journalistic reporting. Students will acquire data-aided storytelling techniques, investigate and produce news stories using big data sets, visualizations and infographics.

• BA Media en cultuur / Media and Culture 3rd year and further;

Werkvormen
Toelichting
During the Utrecht Data School Practicum, students learn how they can collect and analyse data. Students work under supervision of researchers experienced in digital methods. The practicum introduces different forms of data analysis and visualisation, providing the basic tools for digital humanities.
Voorbereiding
Students are expected to get timely access to the relevant software packages and to bring their laptops to classes. Self study and practice is necessary.
