After completing this course, the students will
• have knowledge about and insight in Buddhist modernity in different parts of the world
• be able to apply theoretical concepts to understand contemporary Buddhism in all it's diversity
• be capable to analyze and discuss how colonialism, urbanization, secularization, globalization, feminism and individualization impact contemporary Buddhism
• have the ability to identify and critically study selected modern innovations and adaptations of Buddhism in a global context
• have experienced producing knowledge by doing fieldwork in groups on 'Buddhism Light' in the Netherlands

Vakinhoudelijk

This course is part of specialisation: Religie, politiek en maatschappij.

The course examines the multiple ways in which Buddhism has adapted to rapid economic, social, cultural and political transformations in the modern globalized world with a focus on the 19th and 20th centuries. Buddhism has shown remarkable flexibility and an ability to co-exist with a variety of social structures typical of modern societies in rural areas as well as in highly complex Asian and Western urban centers. This class deals with Buddhism regionally (yearly we select from: South East Asia, Sri Lanka, Tibet, China, Taiwan, Japan, Europe, USA) as well as topically, touching on the impact of colonialism, secularization and science, globalization and mediazation, individualization, and feminism on Buddhist cultures and practices in Asia and the West. Along the way, the course explores Buddhist peace ideals and violent practices. Students deepen their knowledge in several of these areas. Also, students dip their toes into Dutch Buddhism-Light through fieldwork, helping them to phrase their own views on post-religion today.

Toelichting

The lectures will provide the historical background to the developments discussed in class and the theoretical concepts for the study of Buddhism in a modern world. In the work group sessions, we will cover various case studies and apply the theoretical concepts to the material. Students will work with the mandatory readings and engage in group assignments.

Bijdrage

Students are expected to have read the mandatory reading assignments and to bring the texts and their reading notes to class in order to discuss the materials more in-depth.

Voorbereiding

Students are expected to regularly work in small study groups to discuss readings, to apply theoretical concepts in order to analyze concrete empirical material and case studies and to present their findings to the other students in class.

To participate in this course, you must have a basic knowledge of Buddhism the the central concepts and theories for the study of religion, e.g. through "Inleiding Religiewetenschap" RE1V18001 or through self-study of assigned preparatory readings.
