Master Course Biophysics & Molecular Imaging
Cursusdoel
i) reflect on the state-of-the-art and important recent developments within this filed of research; ii) discuss and critically assess literature from this field of research at academic level; iii) place this field of research in context of other research themes to promote interdisciplinary thinking.
Vakinhoudelijk
The course covers key concepts and state-of-the-art research applications of biophysical techniques that allow imaging of molecules at the atomic level (NMR, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy), as well as the dynamics of (single) molecules inside living cells (light microscopy and super-resolution microscopy), or determine the force required to detach two interacting molecules (single molecule force spectroscopy). The specific content of the course will vary somewhat from year to year.
Similar to other general track courses of the MCLS master, each day of the course is focused on a specific topic and may include lectures by principal investigators, short research lectures presented by PhD students or post-docs, or short technical lectures. In addition students will present and discuss research papers under supervision of one of the teachers and do one or two individual or group assignments.
Literature/study material used:
Course manual.
Mandatory for students in Master’s programme: Mandatory for students in the track Biophysics & Molecular Imaging. MCLS students must follow at least 2 out of 4 general track courses, preferably 3 out of 4.
Optional for students in other Master’s programmes GS-LS:
YES. Interested students form other master programmes in and outside the GS-LS should contact the course coordinator before enrolling. But only when maximal capacity for this course (50) is not reached.
