Master Course Molecules & Cells
Cursusdoel
At the end of the course, students should have:
i) profound understanding of several key principles in cell biology and biochemistry relevant for this track. ii) understanding of how these principles are applied to the state-of-the-art research done within this track; iii) insight into optimal combinations of molecular and cell biology techniques necessary to advance a particular field (e.g. intracellular trafficking or protein folding).
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
i) reflect on the state-of-the-art in the fields of biochemistry and molecular cell biology and on important recent developments in these fields; ii) discuss and critically assess literature from this field of research at an academic level; iii) place this field of research in context of other research themes to promote interdisciplinary thinking.

Vakinhoudelijk
Understanding how molecules function in a cellular context is the basis for understanding life. In this course, we will focus on several research topics, in which exciting advances have been made in the recent years. We will discuss how established and emerging research methodologies make it possible to advance the textbook knowledge on the mechanisms underlying the function of biomolecules such as proteins and lipids within living cells. The research concepts discussed in the course are at the basis of the MCLS track Molecules & Cells.
Specific topics will be introduced by experts, who will also discuss different advanced techniques ranging from live cell and single molecule imaging and biophysical and biochemical analysis of proteins and lipids to structural biology approaches such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR).
Similar to other general track courses of the MCLS master, each day of the course is focussed on a specific topic and may include lectures by principal investigators, short research lectures presented by PhD students or post-docs, or short technical lectures. In addition, students will present and discuss research papers under the supervision of one of the teachers and carry out one or two individual or group assignments.

Course materials (lectures and research papers used during the course) will be available through Blackboard.
Mandatory for students in Master’s programme: Mandatory for students in the track. MCLS students need to follow at least 2 out of 4 general track courses, preferably 3 out of 4.
Optional for students in other Master’s programmes GS-LS:
YES. But only when maximal capacity for this course (50) is not reached. Interested students from other master programmes in and outside the GS-LS should contact the course coordinator before enrolling.
