Cursusdoel
After completing this course students are able to:
- formulate research questions
- narrow down a topic and translate concepts into concrete search terms
- find digital and non-digital academic sources use search engines and assess and communicate the relevance of those findings
- use appropriate referencing formats (with tools such as RefWorks)
- plan and structure the research and writing process
- write texts that reflect the basics of academic writing regarding structure (paragraphs, line of argument) and conventional usage (grammar, style, formatting, vocabulary)
- explain the relationship between the way research questions are asked and answers are reported in different academic fields
- demonstrate critical reading skills
- give feedback on their peers’ work
- present research findings orally
- reflect on ethical dilemmas in academic research (choice of subject, datacollection, handling of findings, reporting conclusions, giving credits)

Vakinhoudelijk
Research in Context is a first-semester course that introduces students to research and writing in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Sciences. Students will learn about the main methodological approaches of the three academic traditions and the principles of what constitutes evidence and argumentation. They will also learn practical skills involved in setting up and carrying out research, and reporting results in written and oral form.
Format
Classes meet twice a week. The course includes three plenary guest lectures and is a mixture of in-class activities, workshops and lectures.
