Cursusdoel

After completing this course students are able to:
  1. design an empirical research project in the social sciences and take relevant methodological issues into account
  2. report research findings in a formal format resembling a peer-reviewed journal article
  3. conduct basic descriptive and inferential statistical procedures using the software SPSS
  4. (a) interpret SPSS output and (b) report the findings following the APA format
  5. collaborate with other students and work in a research team
  6. understand, apply, and explain all methodological and statistical terminology
  7. explain all course related methodological and statistical concepts using everyday language
Relationship between assessment and learning goals:
In this course, students are assessed 5 times :
  1. Written in-class test 1: this tests the knowledge and the ability to apply the methodological and statistical terminology covered in the first 6-7 weeks of the course (course goal 6 and 7).
  2. Written in-class test 2: this tests the knowledge, the ability to apply, and interpret the methodological and statistical terminology and the ability to interpret SPSS output (course goals 4(a), 6, and 7).
  3. Research project 1: this project encompasses all aspects of a research project using survey data, starting from research question and ending with a formal report (course goals 1, 2, 3, 4(a), 4(b), and 5).
  4. Research project 2: this project encompasses many aspects of an experimental research project, starting from research question and ending with a formal report (course goals 1, 3, 4(a), 4(b), and 5).
  5. SPSS test: this tests the ability to conduct analyses using SPSS (course goal 3).

Vakinhoudelijk

Research in Practice is an introduction to the methodology and analysis techniques used in social science research. Students are encouraged to acquire all relevant information through group discussions and projects. The topics of this course will not follow the traditional order offered in standard textbooks, but, as the title indicates, will follow the order as needed by social science research in practice. Topics covered include research design, ethics, sampling, measurement, and various analysis techniques for associations between variables and differences between groups.

Format and grading
To pass this course, both exams MUST be passed with at least a C-
For access to level 2 (UCACCMET22 or UCACCMET23) a minimum grade D- is required for the SPSS test as well.
