Vakinhoudelijk
This practice-oriented course acquaints students with critical discourse analysis (CDA): a methodology for investigating the relations between language, power and ideology. CDA starts from the insight that language choices carry values, establish power relationships, and that these can be analysed systematically. CDA originates in sociolinguistics but has developed into a methodology which is applied in various humanities and social sciences disciplines (f.e. media studies and political sciences).
CDA provides tools to critically assess language in use: from texts and images in school books, (social) media, legal documents to news articles.
The course starts with the theoretical underpinnings and key concepts in CDA, addressing questions such as: what does ‘Critical’ in CDA mean? How do textual and visual representations shape our understanding of reality? How can we analyse the ideological dimensions of particular linguistic and visual choices?
Students learn to apply the analytical tools CDA offers on various verbal and visual (news and other media) sources, and to present their results. Through regular practical assignments students actively engage with the material and learn to offer feedback on the work of their peers. In the final part of the course students work on designing a CDA-inspired research project on a topic of their own choice.
