After completion of this course students are able to:
  • demonstrate a lower intermediate level of Mandarin Chinese:
    • read around 600 characters and write 300 characters ,
    • hold an easy everyday conversation in Chinese,
    • write a letter on the computer,
    • read a simple Chinese text with the help of a dictionary.
Relationship between assessment and learning goals:
In this course, the final course grade is based on five elements: quizzes/assignments, a mid-term exam, a final exam, a presentation in Chinese and a book/film review.
  1. Quizzes/assignments: the quizzes test how well you have mastered the new words and characters in the form of a dictation (in total about 200 new words for writing), while the assignments help you to exercise how to use the words in contexts, e.g. by reading and writing posts on WeChat.
  2. Mid-term exam: this tests the reading and writing skills you have acquired during the first half of the semester
  3. Final exam: this tests the reading and writing skills you have acquired during the second half of the semester.
  4. Presentation: this tests your speaking/presenting skills by using the words and grammar you have learned. The discussion session afterwards enhances your daily conversation skills.
  5. Book/film review: this allows you to gain insight into Chinese culture or history through a book or a film. Meanwhile you also train your listening and writing skills by following the conversations in the film and rewriting the story in your own words. Furthermore, you will explore the book/film’s cultural or historical background by reading reviews and discussing the topic.

Vakinhoudelijk

This course works on furthering the students’ knowledge of Mandarin Chinese, which they have acquired during the course of Introduction to Chinese Language and Culture.

Format
Classes meet for 2 hours once a week. Conversation is practiced extensively during the lessons and listening skill is practiced with the help of audiovisual materials. Reading and writing skills are practiced with weekly assignments involving the writing of short articles, reading texts, etc. The small size of the class allows students to benefit from a good deal of individual attention.

This course is meant for students who have acquired to read about 200 characters and write 100 characters. Students who have not taken course [UCHUMCHI11] Introduction to Chinese Language and Culture need to apply for course admittance.
