Intermediate Chinese Language and Culture (2025/2026: Semester 2 – Spring)
Cursusdoel
- demonstrate a lower intermediate level of Mandarin Chinese:
- read around 600 characters and write 300 characters ,
- hold an easy everyday conversation in Chinese,
- write a letter on the computer,
- read a simple Chinese text with the help of a dictionary.
In this course, the final course grade is based on five elements: quizzes/assignments, a mid-term exam, a final exam, a presentation in Chinese and a book/film review.
- Quizzes/assignments: the quizzes test how well you have mastered the new words and characters in the form of a dictation (in total about 200 new words for writing), while the assignments help you to exercise how to use the words in contexts, e.g. by reading and writing posts on WeChat.
- Mid-term exam: this tests the reading and writing skills you have acquired during the first half of the semester
- Final exam: this tests the reading and writing skills you have acquired during the second half of the semester.
- Presentation: this tests your speaking/presenting skills by using the words and grammar you have learned. The discussion session afterwards enhances your daily conversation skills.
- Book/film review: this allows you to gain insight into Chinese culture or history through a book or a film. Meanwhile you also train your listening and writing skills by following the conversations in the film and rewriting the story in your own words. Furthermore, you will explore the book/film’s cultural or historical background by reading reviews and discussing the topic.
