Modern Art
Cursusdoel
- Identify and understand a selection of the most important movements and figures in modern art. In doing so, students will also crucially learn the skills necessary to engage works produced by the many makers from this period that we will not directly study.
- Grasp varying approaches to and definitions of modern art
- Describe modernist works of art both formally and historically
- Critically engage with texts through the practice of close reading, written analysis, and discussion of primary and secondary sources.
- Actively listen, provide feedback, and collaborate with colleagues
Discussion Leadership (10%). Over the course of the semester each student will collaborate with other students to prepare a short presentation and questions on the readings to help prompt and guide our discussion. (Course Objectives: 4 and 5)
Class Participation (10%). (Course Objectives: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5)
Weekly Response Posts on Blackboard (15%). Each week students will write a short post that critically responds to either the assigned weekly readings or, in some cases, to specific questions that have arisen based on museum visits, previous class discussions or current events. Students are encouraged to directly respond to one another in the posts. Students should post their response the night before our discussion class so that the discussion leader and other students have time to read your post in advance. These posts are an opportunity to pose one or two critical questions or make a connection between the readings, museum visits and/or lectures. Their purpose is to begin the discussion that we will continue as a group in class. (Course Objectives: 2, 4 and 5)
First Essay (Visual Analysis) (15%). With a partner you will choose a work of art to visit and discuss. Based on your in-person experience and observation you and your partner will prepare a short presentation, which will focus on describing this artwork in order to communicate a complete sense of it to people who have not looked at it as closely as you have; you should point to the things in the work that interest you and explain why you think they are significant and also connect them to a broader social, historical, political and/or cultural context. Finally, you will each independently synthesize this in a short essay. (Course Objectives: 1, 3 and 5)
Second Essay (15%) Students will write a second short essay based on an either in person or virtual museum visit and independent research. (Course Objectives: 1, 2, and 3)
Provide Peer Feedback on Essays (5%) Students will provide initial constructive feedback to one another on a first draft of class essays. (Course Objective: 5)
Written Exam (30%) This will test students’ ability to identify and show your understanding of key works of art and artistic movements and your grasp of the various definitions of modernism and debates and key issues within the field. (Course Objectives: 1, 2, 3 and 4)
