- demonstrate knowledge of key debates and key theories in the study of visual culture
- apply conceptual tools to critically reflect on objects (artworks, films, ads, photographs, digital culture), phenomena and processes (production, reception, distribution) related to visual culture
- critically analyse (audio)visual images using various methods
- use creative practice research in the form of a scholarly video essay in addition to traditional academic knowledge production (research paper).
- Essay: assessment of learning goals 1, 2, and 3.
- Term paper: assessment of learning goals 1, 2, and 3.
- Portfolio of weekly exercises: assessment of learning goals 1, 2 and 3.
- Video essay (group assignment): assessment of learning goal 2 and 4.

Course Content
Spaces without images are rare in today’s world. One could even claim that our everyday lives are inundated by visuality, by images which circulate meaning we often consume habitually and unquestioningly. Taking the form of paintings, photography, film, music videos, television, GIFs, virtual reality, fashion - visual culture can be entertaining and afford us pleasure, impact who we are and who we aspire to be. However, it also mediates and regulates power relations and determines who is visible and who remains unseen.
In this course we will learn how to use various methods and theories (semiotics, discourse analysis, cultural analysis, decolonial studies, digital culture studies) to critically examine visual media, visual art and artifacts. We will also build a conceptual framework while tackling some of the central themes in the field of visual culture theory ranging from the politics of representation to questions of materiality and decoloniality.
Please note: In spring 2023 we will visit the exhibition “UFO – Unidentified Fluid Other” at Nxt Museum in Amsterdam. The costs for the museum entrance will be covered by UCU, however, travel to and from Amsterdam will have to be arranged by the students themselves.

Each week students will thoroughly prepare for class (portfolio of weekly readings and exercises, mostly individual, some in groups), they will produce a scholarly video essay with peers (creative-practice-as-research), respond to essay questions in the form of a take-home-exam and conclude the course with a term paper on a topic of their choice. Active participation in class is expected.
