Some film scholars allege when we watch a documentary film, Coleridgean suspension of disbelief gets fortified. Notions such as ‘factual representation of reality’ and ‘authenticity’ still define this genre, however, contested this claim may have become in recent years. The perception of a ‘document’ through the lens of ‘truth’ is inevitably strong. In this course we will discuss in how far it is pertinent nowadays to challenge this perception and whether we should or should not dismiss assertions of truth(fulness) altogether.
This theoretical and practical course aims to reflect on current popularisation of audiovisual documentaries and our relationship to these images as producers and as audience. The course introduces critical tools with which the students will analyse documentaries critically and rigorously. Both historical and contemporary examples will be studied to train the students’ theoretical and practical capabilities. Key examples include documentaries by filmmakers like Orson Wells, Luis Buñuel, Leni Riefenstahl, Harun Farocki, Jill Godmillow and Hito Steyerl amongst others.
The students will also be part of a crew with the aim to produce an audiovisual documentary short film, under the supervision of the instructor and additional support from Utrecht University’s Media Lab.Format
- Film theory (e.g., history of documentary, the fact-fiction dichotomy, classification, the mockumentary, etc.)
- Film analysis
- Film production (including pitching ideas,
project planning, film production, editing, crew dynamics, etc.) - Film screenings of selected documentaries
Each class is structured as follows: two sessions before lunch break and two in the afternoon, with a 20’ break between sessions. Each session will be one hour long. Some of the sessions will be devoted to learning practical skills, while the more theoretical seminars will be dedicated to introductory lectures to various topics, discussions of readings, documentary screenings followed by group discussions, project presentations, etc.
During the last two weeks students will mainly work on their short documentary film projects in small crews. During this period students will receive guidance from the instructor.
