After completing this course students are able to:
  1. After completing this course students have in depth knowledge of a specific theme or author in philosophy (Assessment: essays and/or exam, reading, attendance, discussions in class).
  2. After completing this course students are able to write, with supervision, a sophisticated (by undergrad standards) essay on the theme or author of the course. (Assessment: essays).
  3. Main goal: After completing this course students are able to do independent research on a specialized topic in philosophy. (Assessment: essays).

Vakinhoudelijk

Intended for students with a specific interest in advanced research and an eye towards post-graduate studies in philosophy, this course is designed to meet the needs of students who wish to develop greater depth in their philosophical studies.
The course consists of rotating content based on the expertise of philosophy teachers at University College. It is organized thematically, and requires students to follow three seminars of five weeks each treating main categories of philosophical investigation, such as metaphysics, ontology, epistemology, aesthetics, ethics, philosophy of mind, language, religion and science.

Fall 2023 - Aesthetics: Beauty, Philosophy, and the Arts

Content
What is beauty? What is art? What is the role of imitation, taste, play, form, matter, nature, truth, genius, expression, community, world, or even revolution, when we think about these questions?
This course offers an introduction to classical and contemporary texts from the history of philosophical aesthetics. These texts deal with such notions as mentioned above, and they often relate to the various art genres and art works in their historical development.
Apart from the readings, the course also introduces ways to open arts-related objects, practices and sense experiences to philosophical questioning.
A special focus project (e.g. Schelling or Da Vinci) will be the subject of student presentations. Depending on the need of students, attention may be given to such recent developments as artistic research, bio art, AI/robotics, commons and ecotechnology.
In the introductory part of the course, we will be reading across historical and contemporary texts, acquainting ourselves with core concepts and theories from Antiquity and the Renaissance, and from the birth of modern aesthetics in the eighteenth century until today.
Through 'object lessons' we will relate these theories to concrete art works.
In the second part of the course, we will be looking into current aesthetic debates on the basis of individual or joint research projects.


Format
We will acquaint ourselves with a number of key text in the first few weeks. After this phase students will present further readings, guide the discussion and write their first paper. A special advanced project will be subject of student presentations (for grade). The final period will be focusing on current aesthetics practices and cases, organized around the students’ individual research projects (second paper).

If time allows, we might be visiting arts exhibitions, labs and/or performances related to the material under discussion.
