Vakinhoudelijk
What is the role of imitation, taste, play, form, matter, nature, truth, genius, expression, community, world, or even revolution, when we inquire into the nature of beauty and the arts? What is all the talk about the sublime about?
This course offers an introduction to modern and contemporary classics from the history of philosophical aesthetics. These texts deal with such concepts as mentioned above, and they often relate to the artistic views, works and practices of their own time.
In the introductory part of the course, we will familiarize ourselves with key concepts and theories from Immanuel Kant, Schelling, Hegel and Nietzsche onwards. Through object lessons we will relate these theories to natural and artistic experience.
In the second part of the course, we will look into more recent aesthetic debates on the basis of research projects. This season's focus will be on the return of the sublime in the French philosophy of the late 20th Century (Lyotard, Derrida, Deleuze, Meillassoux, and others).
