Cursusdoel

After completing the course, students are able to:
  1. Explain the major global health challenges as set out in SDG3, their causes and possible solutions.
  2. Appraise the interaction between SDG3 and the various other Sustainable Development Goals.
  3. Appraise effective interventions to improve global health.
  4. Use various skills relevant for interdisciplinary global health research: quantitative methods, qualitative methods and intercultural/-professional collaboration.

​​​​​Relationship between course aims and assessments:

In this course, the final course grade is based on five elements: Active class engagement, two group presentations, a paper, and a Take Home Exam.
  1. Active Class Engagement: This assesses your ability to actively contribute to your own learning process and that of other students, online and in the classroom, by listening to others and engaging in group discussions.
  2. Group Presentation 1: This assesses your ability to work together in an interdisciplinary team, to do desk research on an SDG topic in relation to contemporary challenges, and be able to share that knowledge and facilitate a group discussion.
  3. Paper: This assesses your ability to critically reflect upon a global health topic, based on literature, and to write about that in a clear and well-structured way.
  4. Take Home Exam: This tests your knowledge on some of the global health topics discussed in both the assigned readings and lectures.
  5. Group Presentation 2: This assesses your ability to assess and elaborate upon the health status of a specific population in a low - or middle-income country; taking into account the burden of disease and determinants, how this is linked to other non-health (care) domains and what interventions have been carried out in order to improve the situation. This group presentation also tests your ability to work interdisciplinary with fellow students and look into the topic from various relevant perspectives.

Content

Global Health is an area of study, research and practice that focuses on improving health and wellbeing worldwide. Health has many determinants, and these exceed the ‘biomedical’ domain. Therefore, an interdisciplinary approach is required. In this course, we will use the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a global agenda for the period 2015 to 2030 that was agreed on by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015. We will explore major global health challenges of our time - such as Covid-19 and environmental health - and address current and desired interventions to tackle these challenges in an equitable way. As an interdisciplinary approach is required to tackle the global challenges, interprofessional collaboration and skills will be practiced throughout the course.

Format

Every week has its own specific topic linked to global health. The teachers and visiting lecturers from different institutes and disciplines will elaborate on the weeks’ topic, the related SDG (or SDGs) and how this is linked to health. We will also explore the topics by doing group work, to further deepen our understanding. Sessions are interactive and there is lots of room for discussion and exploring themes together.
