Vakinhoudelijk
Forensic linguists can help identify potential barriers to justice and use their expertise to act as agents of change. This is a primary goal of our course. Together, we will focus on societal problems in which language use has high-stakes outcomes.
Topics covered in the course include legal language, forced confessions, investigative interviewing, authorship analysis, copyright infringement, earwitness testimony, linguistic disadvantage and the impact of power in real case outcomes.
You’ll meet world-leading practitioners and scholars, whose work has helped shape institutional practice such as investigative interviewing, court judgements, and public inquiries. You will also meet victims and survivors whose first-hand experiences will help communicate the value of language analysis in the forensic domain. This way, you learn FL not just from the experts who do it, but from the people it most affects.
Teaching will be classroom-based but community-focused. Students will also learn from visiting practitioners and scholars as well as survivors and victims of crimes. There will also be a field trip to a forensic institution. Students will have an opportunity to develop their independent research paper for the wider academic and forensic community by presenting their findings at a digital (or hybrid) symposium, at the end of the semester.
