Earth System Processes and Geology
Cursusdoel
- Value (scientific) information related to the Earth’s geodynamic processes, including information pertaining to current environmental problems and sustainability issues;
- Develop mechanistic (process-based) models to quantitatively analyze Earth’s geodynamic processes;
- Examine rock samples to determine mineral composition of the material using light microscopy;
- Describe the geological drivers affecting availability of natural resources;
- Discuss how earth sciences and the resource availability relates to societal issues.

Vakinhoudelijk
In this course, students will first acquire an in-depth understanding of Earth’s dynamic processes, forming mountains and basins, with special focus on geohazards (e.g., earthquakes, volcanism, mass-extinctions). Next, they will investigate the geological conditions required to produce ore bodies, in general with a focus on the Rare Earth Element group, which is of prime importance for renewable energy mixes. Finally, students will quantify rates of the natural formation of fossil fuels, and options to mitigate the anthropogenic rise in atmospheric CO2 levels. This course will provide hands-on experience with the analysis of rock deformation as well as the development of process-based computational models to describe quantitative processes related to natural formation and current extraction of Earth resources. We will also debate how classical economic geology can provide insight in technological solutions assisting sustainable resource management.
Format
The course combines traditional forms of teaching with engaging hands-on act:
- Lectures to support lecture notes and book chapters from the book “Earth: portrait of a planet by S. Marshak (5th or 6th edition)”;
- Use of Google Earth to reconstruct Earth’s history
- Analysis of rock samples to understand rock deformation using light microscopy;
- Development and analysis of process-based computational models of formation and extraction of rare Earth resources.
