Cursusdoel

After completing this course students are able to:
  • demonstrate insights into research in modern physics, can identify research topics where interdisciplinary approaches are required, and can illustrate with examples potential applications of current research projects. (Assessment: report, essay, presentation)
  • analyze scientific articles, write with supervision a summary/overview on the current status of a research topic using standard scientific formats, and can communicate these in an oral presentation. (Assessment: exam, essay, presentation)
  • undertake systematic analysis and interpretation of physical data, as well as computational and describe experimental techniques use in current research projects. (Assessment: exam, report)

Vakinhoudelijk

This course is designed for students wishing to have a deeper insight into research topics in modern physics and astronomy. Possible topics: astrobiology, study and applications of nanostructures, new phases of matter, and applications of imaging techniques in areas such as climate studies and medicine.

The course is equally relevant for students seeking to broaden their general knowledge
in modern physics in the spirit of a liberal arts and science education, and for students aiming to pursue a career in physics.
Format
In this course students study and explore three different research topics in physics. Each topic has its own supervisor(s) and lasts approximately five weeks each. Students are assigned articles/texts to read and analyze. More specifically, they are asked to identify and explain how different research questions are addressed, and to search for further scientific literature by themselves. Students learn primarily via guided discussion meetings with the topic supervisor(s). Self-study in preparation for these meetings is essential. There will be also guest lectures and/or opportunities to have question and answer sessions with experts, as well as visits to research laboratories or institutes.
