Cursusdoel

After completing this course students are able to:
  1. indicate the importance of economic growth in a historical perspective (tested in the midterm exam, homework exercises, presentation and participation during class discussions, and the term paper);
  2. formulate the necessary conditions for economic growth (tested in the midterm exam, homework exercises, term paper and final exam);
  3. describe the different theoretical and practical problems that occur when analyzing economic growth (tested in the presentation and participation during class discussions, and the term paper);
  4. analyze economic growth using formal models, and with these analyses give insight into the effects of economic policy on growth (tested in the midterm exam, final exam, homework exercises, presentation and participation during class discussions, and the term paper);
  5. analyze a growth process systematically based on economic theory and empirical data (tested in the term paper)

Vakinhoudelijk

This course critically explores the theories and empirical analysis of economic growth. We are especially interested in the literature on both the proximate and fundamental causes of economic growth. We will re-visit material covered by the course ‘Macroeconomics’ related to the Solow Model, including: the role of savings, capital stock, population growth and technological progress in economic expansion. In this course, we will go beyond that model and investigate the role of a large number of other factors, including: demography, human capital, globalization, institutions, geography, government policy, cultural differences and natural resources. Towards the end of the course, we will contrast the goals of economic growth with structural transformation, and engage with ideas about de-growth.
Format
Learning will be fostered through Lectures, Seminars, and the preparation of a group Term Paper and presentations. Weekly learning activities will be organized on the basis of the themes explored in the course textbook, which will be supplemented relevant academic articles. Lectures will guide students on the topics covered by the course textbook; Seminars, help them to master said material. Seminars will also allow them to engage with relevant academic articles beyond the course textbook. The preparation of a group Term Paper and presentation will provide students the opportunity to empirically explore and critically engage with theoretical concepts taken up in the course.
