Geographical Field Course - Paris
Cursusdoel
- Identify and interpret urban challenges in Paris: Analyze key urban planning, urban geography, urban development, and geographical challenges in Paris, situating them within broader economic, political, and socio-cultural and socio-linguistic contexts, with a particular focus on migration, inclusion, sustainability, and city branding.
- Conduct fieldwork based on integrating theoretical and historical sources: Synthesize insights from academic readings, historical sources, and visual materials together with direct field observations. Critically assess the perspectives of public, private, and non-profit actors through interviews and site visits, and compare these real-world viewpoints with academic theories.
- Reflect on interdisciplinary approaches to urban and socio-cultural issues: Combine perspectives from urban geography and cultural studies to address complex urban challenges, such as accessibility, housing affordability, and representation. Critically reflect on the contributions and limitations of your disciplinary expertise while integrating intercultural, linguistic, and spatial analyses.
- Analyze and reflect on intercultural encounters: Evaluate intercultural interactions encountered during the course, considering how cultural and linguistic differences shape urban and spatial experiences as well as a researcher’s positionality in these contexts.
- Communicate effectively in cross-cultural settings: Demonstrate effective communication with French professionals and local actors, applying appropriate cultural conventions in both formal and informal contexts, while integrating intercultural competence into your interactions.

Format
In the preparatory weeks, there will be lectures, a discussion on a documentary, a guest lecture and student presentations.
A program of activities in Paris forms the core of this course. Supported by guest lectures, an active exploration of the different study sites by the participants themselves constitutes the ‘fieldwork’ component. Teams further explore their specific theme through observations in the field, visuals and other materials. Fieldwork will be complemented by organized group visits to specific sites, institutions and interactive sessions with local experts (academics and representatives of NGOs, public and commercial sectors). Discussions allow for an in-depth view of issues and the exchange of insights.
