Legal Perspectives on Sustainability: the labour law and environmental law nexus
Cursusdoel
- Break down the complexity of interests in employee – employer relations and identify options for trade unions to participate and influence the impacts on labour conditions and rights of workers as these are affected by the need to transition to sustainable production methods.
- Navigate the international legal frameworks and core legal instruments connecting labour law and environmental law, so as to understand the processes and norms applicable to sustainability-driven economic transformations and their impacts on labour conditions and rights of workers.
- Critically reflect on the requirements for “green jobs” and a “just transition” to achieve sustainability-driven economic transformations.
- Develop practical skills of working with labour organisations and learn about the interests and needs to influence impacts on labour conditions and rights of workers as a result of a transitions to a more sustainable economy.

Vakinhoudelijk
This course will consist of lectures on international labour law and international environmental law related to climate change and the SDG’s, while providing students the opportunity to engage directly with trade unions and NGOs in the field of labour relations. Students will combine their knowledge gained through this course with the insights gained from various labour organisations to conduct a simulated negotiation in the final week of the course.
