Vakinhoudelijk
Life is as fragile as it is wondrous. Pandemics, illness, underemployment, wars and other disasters may hit anyone. Solidarity exists in many forms. But it has to be organized. This course deals with organized self-help via mutual micro-insurance (where a community and not the state or a commercial party organizes the insurance) and micro-credit. It also includes philanthropy, and internet-based forms of sharing resources, such as homes, couches, knowledge, information and resources such as equipment. Last but not least, we discuss Transnational Social Movement Organisations (TSMOs). TSMOs have brought us very many social rights (environmental, sexual, gender, labour etc.) and have grown much in number, global coverage and interconnectedness. Organizing solidarity is about finding organisational structures that work We survey many forms of organized solidarity, looking at their genesis and development, at theories on their rise or failure, surveying all continents of the globe, and using a theoretically diverse set of studies on solidaristic human behaviour and organisational frameworks.
The class meets twice a week for two hours. Two hours will be devoted to lecturing and explaining the topic by the instructor. The other two hours will be devoted to student-chaired discussions. In preparation of the lecture, the students carefully read the articles in advance and reflect upon them
