Politics of Representation: Critical Approaches to Gender, Race and Culture

Cursusdoel

- Students become acquainted with and learn to practice a new, critical ways of looking at cultural practices.
- Students know the main themes, theories and methods as employed in Gender Studies in the context of the Humanities with regard to cultural practices and the theories of representation.
- Students learn how to read and interpret both historical and contemporary cultural representations.
- Students know how to make an academic intervention pertaining to the above issues.

Vakinhoudelijk

Priority rules apply to this course. Make sure you register for this course before June 12, 12.00 noon to be considered for enrollment.
The following students are guaranteed a place:
  • BA TCS or LAS;
  • students who are registered for the minor Gender Studies;
  • pre-master’s students;
  • exchange students.
Other students will be placed by means of random selection.

The aim of this interdisciplinary course is to develop and practice a critical way of looking at historical and contemporary cultural practices. In these practices of production, dissemination and reception, gender roles are permanently (re)constructed, just as are race and other lines of difference.
We will be studying cultural practices in various manifestations: popular culture (e.g. movies, advertising, music icons) but also the cultural logic underlying art practice and visual research. In all these sites old and new identities are being strengthened and subverted. The interaction between text and image will be main point of focus.

LAS and TCS students who follow this course as part of the core curriculum of their major (hoofdrichting Postcolonial and Gender Studies) are required to complete one of the following compulsory preparation courses: Introduction to Gender Studies (block 3), Gender, etniciteit en cultuurkritiek (blok 1) or Gender, Ethnicity and Cultural Critique (blok 1). Aanvullende informatie

Early Exit option for international exchange students (5 ECTS)

Exchange students who are required to return to their home university before January, are allowed to choose an Early Exit option for this course. The Early Exit option means that students can finish the course before Christmas break, receiving 5 ECTS for the course. Students must make arrangements with the course coordinator at the start of the course.

Two meetings every week (1 lecture of 2 hours and 1 seminar of 2 hours).

Bijdrage

Active participation, commentary on peers' work, exchange of insights and ideas, critical reflection on the readings, gathering own materials for presentation, textual and visual analysis and discussion.

Voorbereiding

Read assigned book chapters and articles, prepare readings for presentation and discussion, collect visual material to analyse according to the methods and models offered in the course, critically assess the readings from the perspective of one's own discipline and/or research interests, prepare assignments.
