Overarching course aim
To develop interdisciplinary solutions to real-world global health challenges (Community-Engaged Learning)

After completing this course students are able to:
  • Analyze global health challenges and identify underlying causes
  • Apply disciplinary knowledge to global health challenges
  • Apply an interdisciplinary approach to propose solutions for global health challenges
  • Critically assess proposed solutions to global health challenges
  • Reflect on the contribution of their field of expertise to address these global health challenges, their own role in an interdisciplinary collaborative process, as well as the expertise and role of others in these processes
Relationship between assessment and learning goals:

In this course, the final course grade is based on four elements: Individual Paper for 30%, Student-Led Class (SLC) for 20%, Final Presentation for 30%, and Reflective Portfolio for 20%.
  1. Individual Paper: This assesses your ability to critically reflect upon and in-depth explore a global health topic, based on literature, and to write about that in a clear and well-structured way.
  2. Student-Led Class: This assesses your ability to work together in an interdisciplinary team, to do desk research on a global health topic, and be able to share that knowledge with others and facilitate a group discussion.
  3. Final Presentation: This assesses your ability to collaboratively present both the journey and result of the work you have been doing in the course over the past few weeks. This group presentation also tests your ability to work interdisciplinary with fellow students as well as stakeholders, and look into the topic from various relevant perspectives.
  4. Reflective Portfolio: This assesses your ability to be self-reflective on the process of learning in global health, as what you see, learn and experience is related to where you stand in terms of interests, opportunities and experiences.

Vakinhoudelijk

Large disparities in health outcomes exist in the world: a woman in Sierra Leone has a 100-fold higher risk of dying than a woman during child birth in the Netherlands and many people living in low- and middle income countries face the double health risk of high rates of infectious diseases as malaria and HIV/AIDS, with simultaneously increasing rates of non-communicable diseases. Risks associated with increasing urbanization, globalization, such as commercial determinants of health and changes resulting in unfavorable life-styles, but also environmental risks, whether man-made (i.e. air pollution) or naturally occurring (i.e. hurricanes, floods, famine) pose new health challenges that need to be addressed.
  • Students are being introduced to various concepts crucial to achieve global health impact.
  • Students learn how to apply these concepts by developing solutions to challenges faced by one of the partners. In this course, we partner with various global health intervention studies conducted in countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and Asia, in collaboration with the UMC Utrecht.
  • Students will explore the work in these projects with support from some of the project members. , Students will also assess the work by applying the concepts and tools provided to them in the course. , and use this gained knowledge to develop an interdisciplinary solution for one of the project’s challenges
  • Students are expected to complete assigned readings and viewings before class, and actively contribute to the course discussions and group work, to enhance their learning ability and that of fellow students, and reach the course objectives in the best possible way. There is a lot of attention for acquiring and strengthening competencies and personal skills needed in global health practice, such as listening, presenting, collaborating in multicultural and interdisciplinary teams, and writing academically.
Possible to choose both Public Health and Global Health Practice?
It is possible to choose Public Health AND Global Health Practice, as these courses are different. Public health is more localized to the Dutch context, while global health takes a broader, international perspective. It is good to know, though, that both fields are highly interdisciplinary, there is a focus on health equity, and there is a CEL approach in both courses. If you feel you want to dive deeper into these concepts and approaches, choosing both courses might be good for you. If you decide this, we encourage you to challenge yourself to monitor your learning and go the extra mile, and share any suggestions that may enhance the delivery of the classes.

Voorkennis

Students that are enrolled in this course without having completed [UCINTGLO21] Global Health are asked to prepare a short assignment on the basic principles and concepts in global health. This will take 2 hours, and will take place during the first week of class. If the student wishes to do this prior to the course, that is also an option, for which you can contact the course coordinator.
