- Introduction to recent developments in art historical research and related research in art institutions and museums.
- Critical evaluation of these developments to assess their future importance for the discipline
Course content
During the last decades we have seen trends and developments within art history that sometimes differ considerably in research question or method from scholarly pursuits in the last century. This course will give an introduction to some of these new profiles of art historical research in our present age, including technical art history, transcultural and global art history (or transnational art history), transhistorical trends, post-colonial theory and ideas on ecology and sustainability, diversity and participation . We will also critically reflect on the consequences of these trends and shifts for how art is preserved, and collected and displayed.
In this course, we go on field trips. There may be costs such as entrance tickets, travel expenses.
