Course aim

The goal of the Workshop Audiovisual Media is to build a bridge between education, theory and practice through project-based education.
Students work together (under the supervision of professors) on an audiovisual product that is thematically in line with the academic profiles Film and media culture Television and media culture and Screen Cultures in Transition of the BA Media and Culture.

Students learn to actively use the knowledge and skills they have gained in their Academic Profile and apply them in a professional context.
In addition, students are trained in important professional skills, such as communicating with professional partners, working in a team, developing ideas and concepts and learning to work towards a specific end product.

Course content

The Workshop is an intensive course with technical instructions and a lot of group work (e.g. brainstorm, preparation, writing, recording and editing days) outside the formal seminar times. Therefore, we ask you to be available for this course in the time slots A and D. The seminars take place 2 fulltime days of practical education on location in timeslot AD (technical instruction/carry out group assignments). Teams are formed during the first seminar, in consultation with the participating students.

The Workshop Audiovisual media offers you the opportunity to use your research skills and media studies knowledge for the development of an audiovisual product. The professor determines the theme for the assignment to guarantee that the content is consistent with the themes and research areas of the Department of Media and Culture Studies.

In the Workshop Audiovisual media you practice skills which are important in the creation of an audiovisual product: research, concept development, script writing, camera work, sound and lighting technology and editing.
In a team, you first produce a short leader based on your own script and soundtrack of your choice. In part two of the workshop, you work on a short audiovisual (non-)fiction production as final product. As a team you are responsible for compiling a production dossier (including log books and story boards), in which you collectively reflect on your collaboration and the artistic result of your two audiovisual productions.
This workshop offers you the opportunity, as a media and culture scholar, to apply your acquired knowledge and skills in wider society and in the field of media and culture in particular. Therefore, this workshop concerns an orientation on (part of) the professional practice. You learn to work on a project independently and within a team: how do you translate an assignment / question into a suitable product for your intended goal and target audience, how do you divide roles and tasks, how do you address each other about the quality and progress of the work, how do you plan the work, etc. In addition, you practice the important skill to communicate orally and in writing about your work with professionals and with other stakeholders in the field. With this experience you learn to reflect on the efficiency of the production processes and the influence of editorial choices on the artistic quality and on the content of the product. Moreover, the Workshop Audiovisual media stimulates creativity and efficiency in acting and thinking. All these skills are extremely relevant for your future career.

  • BA Media en cultuur/ Media and Culture 3rd year and further;
  • BA CIW 3rd year and further;
  • BA TCS en LAS 3rd year and further;
  • premaster students.
Other students will be placed by means of random selection.

Communication and collaboration with (professional) partners in the projects, quality of oral and written reporting, degree of creativity in production processes; content and artistic quality of final product.

Required | Weight 30% | Minimum grade 5.5 | ECTS 2.25
