Cursusdoel

Learning objectives of this course:
The student demonstrates:
  • knowledge of and insight into general theories in the field of applied ethics, and moral and political philosophy;
  • knowledge of a specialism within the study programme, or thorough knowledge at the interface of the study programme and another field;
  • The ability to conduct research in applied ethics and practical philosophy and to report on it in a manner that meets the general standards of the discipline;
  • The ability to provide identify research questions in applied ethics, and provide a sustained argument in defence of an appropriate thesis statement.

Vakinhoudelijk

The master's program concludes with a thesis, which serves as the final component of the program, allowing you to integrate and apply the knowledge, skills, and insights you have acquired. You will conduct independent research and, based on the collected information, write a thesis.

You are free to choose your thesis topic, provided it aligns with the program’s objectives. However, you must keep in mind that the thesis should generally be supervised by a faculty member, meaning that it should fit within their expertise and availability. In addition to your primary supervisor, who must be an expert in the specific area of your thesis, a second examiner will be assigned to approve the thesis proposal and assess the final result.

Because faculty availability is an important factor, you do not choose your supervisor yourself; instead, the program coordinator assigns one in consultation with the teaching team, based in part on your proposed research question.

You complete the Master's programme by writing a Master's thesis based on original research. Students are required to conduct independent, individual research in the field of the Master programme. The master thesis counts for 20 ECTS and forms an integral and important part of the MAE programme.

Voorkennis

Required courses: you can only start writing your thesis if you have successfully completed three of the four required courses of the programme (Ethical Theory and Moral Practice; Ethics of Institutions; Ethics and Public Policy; Methods and Tools in Practical Philosophy.
