Cursusdoel

After successful completion of the course, students
1) have learned about grammatical differences between (academic) English and Dutch;
2) have acquired detailed knowledge of articulatory and contrastive phonetics and learned to apply this to their own pronunciation skills;
3) have improved their listening comprehension and learned to transcribe sounds using phonetic symbols;
4) have improved their English grammar, fluency and pronunciation, so as to increase their intelligibility and acceptability by native speaker standards.

Vakinhoudelijk

This course offers an introduction to the sound system of English (especially phonetics), as well as the grammatical concepts needed for speaking and writing academic English. In addition to training practical grammar, it is designed to help native speakers of Dutch improve their English pronunciation, fluency and listening comprehension in a variety of ways. These closely connected skills will be discussed and practised within the context of articulatory and contrastive phonetics. Students choose either standard non-regional British English (General British or Received Pronunciation) or General American English as a pronunciation model.

Note: We aim to have separate groups for students who have been learning North American English and those who have been learning a variety of British English. These students should buy the appropriate pronunciation books (see book list). Those who enrol late will need to contact the secretariat to ensure they are placed in a suitable group.

Aanvullende informatie

NB: Students who are looking for an elective course to train their spoken English proficiency, but who are not interested in acquiring native-like pronunciation or detailed knowledge of the scientific study of phonetics, are advised to take Academic Speaking (TL1V18001) in period 1 or 3.

Per week: 6 hours for reading; 6 hours for preparing assignments and presentations.

Students' knowledge of articulatory and contrastive phonetics, their listening comprehension and transcription skills, practical grammar.

4 minitests (10% each) in weeks 2-8 (3 by computer; 1 hand-written transcription test)

An oral exam tests students' English pronunciation and ability to express themselves correctly and fluently in spoken English.

Oral exam in weeks 8-9

Referaat 2

Verplicht | Weging 20% | ECTS 1,5

Presentation: Students' ability to express themselves fluently and coherently on topics related to phonetics and phonology.

Presentation: weeks 3-7
